Review This is a problem book in Euclidean plane geometry, written by an undergraduate at MIT with extensive experience in, and expertise at mathematical competitions and problem solving. The principal intended audience is students preparing for some kind of Olympiad or competition, and for such people this book should prove quite valuable. It is not only filled with a number of worked examples and lots of problems (some accompanied by solutions) but also contains discussions of general theory, specific solution techniques, and helpful advice as to when to, and when not to, apply certain methods.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I ("Fundamentals") discusses a number of basic ideas that will be used repeatedly in the sequel. I hesitate to call this part of the book a "review," because many of the topics covered here (e.g., Ceva's theorem, the power of a point) might well be new to a student who has not taken a college course in geometry. Part II ("Analytic Techniques") does not, its name notwithstanding, involve analysis, but does cover a variety of useful techniques for tackling geometric problems: computational formulas, complex numbers, and barycentric coordinates. Part III ("Further from Kansas") brings in more advanced ideas, with chapters on inversion with respect to a circle, the extended Euclidean plane (projective geometry), and complete quadrilaterals. Part IV contains a series of appendices, mostly consisting of hints and/or solutions to some of the problems in the earlier parts.

A good understanding of high school geometry, and a fondness for solving problems, should be sufficient background for this book. There are topics covered here that are not generally covered in a high school course, but definitions are provided for these.

The heart of a book like this is, of course, the problems. As I noted earlier, there are a great many of them, and by and large, they struck me as very difficult and involved. Even the diagrams for some of them can be a bit daunting. They should provide a good challenge for prospective test-takers, though the large number of unsolved problems might prove frustrating for some.

Even if not used as the text for a geometry course, an instructor of such a course might want to keep the book handy as a potential source of challenging problems. Brenda Ritter on The 11th Hour of the 11th Day
  At first I was surprised to get so many calls and e-mails about those who have read The 11th hour of the 11th Day. One was the former chairman of Oklahoma State University's Journalism Department who wrote a four-page favorable review of the novel.    I think most readers identify with the family because although The 11th Hour of the 11th Day is a novel, it is fiction that moves the reader into reality. That is because most everything in the novel actually happened.   When I first started writing the novel, I sent it to my daughter Jennifer who, at that time, was head of the Writing Center at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. I took my name off of the manuscript and suggested that perhaps some of her writing students would like to edit it. I was surprised that the most interested student was a male Inuit who shared his insights with me.   I always felt it was my destiny to write this family saga and my thoughts turned into action when I received a large envelope from the National Archives of Canada. It contained my grandfather's military and medical records. As I read the handwritten pages, they revealed a story of suffering, endurance and a tenacity to live.     The 11th Hour of the 11th Day appeals to both men and women and everyone seems to have the same reaction. When they call me, their first words are, "When are you writing the sequel?" They tell me that when they start reading the book, they cannot put it down and some have stayed up all night. I received a call from a friend who stars in a recent documentary being shown on PBS. In a very excited voice, he pleaded with me to tell him what happens next. "While I was reading this book, I felt like I was part of this family," he said.  I think that's the best compliment an author can receive.   As we journey through the circle of life, let us not forget those who came before us and tell their stories.   

About the Author
BRENDA RITTER, is an award winning author, writer and journalist who was born in Canada but has lived in Texas for most of her life. Her writing style is narrative driven with a voice that is crisp, clean and direct leaving out the parts that most readers skip. As a work in progress, The 11th Hour of the 11th Day is a fellowship winner in Concordia University's 2012 Summer Literary Seminar. Her numerous honors and awards include the U.S. Congressional Achievement Award; Outstanding Journalism Awards from the Texas and Houston/Harris County Mental Health Associations; Outstanding Investigative Reporting from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association and more than 30 Star Writing Awards from the Texas School Public Relations Association. Sometimes shocking but amusing tales of doctoring in a remote Russian town just after the First World War/Revolution. Tried looking up on Wikipedia to work out why he was injecting people with camphor, which I only connect with killing moths. Sounds as though he has been thrown in at the deep end before he has completed the practical part of his docotr's training. Luckily most of his patients survive!

Definitely aimed a little more at the academically minded (the stories were originally published in medical journals). I still found it enjoyable, even though I don't work in medicine and know very little about it. I think it does address a lot of more universal concerns, common to all of the highly trained professional fields, like questioning your own competence and how every time you start to think you've seen everything, something /special/ shows up.

Awesome book. Watched the show first and loved both.

The conditions and era in which this new doctor worked were challenging, to say the least. His humility and willingness to accept the help of experienced assistants--even those with little formal training--were admirable, as was his dedication to this practice. Thank God, doctors are no longer sent out to "practice" with so little practical training.

A most interesting look into the life of a new and inexperienced doctor and the tools and potions he had to use. As a nurse, i found the whole book fascinating!

Recently graduated from medical school, Dr. Bulgakov (no doubt writing at least in part from personal experience) gets assigned to a hospital in a remote Russian village, feeling unprepared to practice medicine. Slowly he learns his trade through interactions with hundreds of local peasants, full of superstition and misinformation, but who slowly come to trust his skill. Dr. B eventually develops confidence in his own abilities and is transferred to a larger hospital. There he hears that his successor in the village is ill and eventually Dr. B takes possession of the successor's diary, where he learns the true cause of the man's illness.While the first part of this short book paints a vivid picture of rural life in pre-revolutionary Russia and the experience of an inexperienced country doctor establishing life amid desolation, it goes downhill from there. In fact, it becomes downright disjointed. The diary of the doctor's successor becomes the final portion of the novel and it is not skillfully integrated. Bulgakov's book, The Master and Margarita, is a much better bet.

The most fascinating, interesting book that I have read in a long time. It takes place in a very small town in Russia beginning in 1917. A brilliant, just out of medical school doctor is sent to a very small town. He is very afraid of encountering terrible problems requiring surgery he has never seen or never done. He knows he has a lot to learn, but does very well and earns the respect of his co-workers and the people in the community. A series of very interesting experiences in that cold dark place in Russia. And then, there is the diary of his doctor friend from his student days. It's the diary of a young man who gets lost in his addiction. Extremely readable and heart breaking.The only problem with this book is that it's far too short.

chooses to serve his first year of practice in a rural hospital. He describes his colleagues, his challenges, his triumphs - and it is as though we were there with him. The book ends with chilling excerpts from a former classmate's diary who falls into narcotic addiction.
